A social network for members of the borderlands committee to facilitate communication between meetings.

About the Borderlands Project

Launched in 2003, The Borderlands Project aims to build greater awareness for the unique assets of the rural area that spans the CT-RI border, explore the shared threats and opportunities that this region faces, and foster a culture of learning and collaboration across this bi-state, multi-town, multi-scale region.

Discovering the Heart and Soul of Killingly

Please join us for a conversation about your town. We want to understand YOUR connection to Killingly and ask that you participate in a focus group to discuss the following key questions:

• What three words or phrases would you use to describe Killingly?
• What draws people to Killingly?
• If there were one special place or feature of Killingly that might capture the essence or spirit of the place, what would that place or feature be?
• What if lost would fundamentally change Killingly forever?
• If you could change one thing about Killingly, what would it be and how?
• If you had to see growth in Killingly, what kind of growth would you like to see, why, and where would you like to see it happen?

About this Project
The Borderlands Village Innovation Pilot is a collaborative citizens effort to define the future of two Borderlands communities – Exeter, RI and Killingly, CT. The first phase of this project intends to gather the wisdom of residents and other relevant community stakeholders to generate a community vision that retains and sustains “heart and soul” of these communities for generations to come. For more information on the Borderlands Village Innovation Pilot, visit www.borderlandsproject.org or contact the Pilot Coordinator, Susan Westa at (860)774-9600 ext. 24 or susan.westa@uconn.edu.

The Village Innovation Pilot

What is the Village Innovation Pilot?

The Village Innovation Pilot is a strategic planning initiative that will work with two Borderlands towns who want to conserve critical lands by channeling new growth into existing or planned village centers. The Pilot intends to work with each town selected to:

1) Create the vision of what that kind of growth would look like,

2) Identify the actions and technical resources necessary to achieve the vision,

3) Provide focused technical expertise in a workshop setting, and

4) Help to implement changes at the appropriate scale to make the desired growth a reality.

What is the Role of This Network?

This network is in place to facilitate communication with members of the Killingly community. Anyone who lives or works in the Killingly area is welcome to join the network to learn more about the project, and contribute your voice and vision.
We are currently looking for members of the community who would be willing to participate in focus group meetings.

A great example

I wanted to share this article from Mother Earth News with everyone. I read it in the magazine... whenever it came out.. and I really thought that this presented an example of the kind of community I would like to live in. This is just a portion of the article - to see the rest, click here.

Tutorials and Tours!

I just found a program that will let me make screen capture videos. That means that I can make tutorials and tours of the different features of the network where you can watch me navigate through it step by step while I explain it all. Hopefully that will help anyone who has trouble with all this newfangled computer stuff :)

So, my plan is to work on that tommorow. The first tutorial will be getting through the sign up proccess (which really isnt that painful), and will also show people… Continue

By the way:

Just so you know, right now this network is a private network which is invitation only. If we really wanted to we could keep it for committee members only, but I think that would not really use the site to its potential.

Alternately, I could use this network mainly as a platform to recruit people through the internet and other committee members could participate as much or as little as they want to.

Let me know what you… Continue
